More interestingly, it is an ideal that is easily identifiable in present day. them” mentality creates barriers, and promotes a dangerous sense of nationalism, all fuelled by political propaganda. It was appropriately titled “Us and Them- and the destruction of reality.”Īs Stanley continually emphasized throughout, fascism is the undermining of equality, the developing and alienating of a group of people as “other”. The first lecture covered the structure of fascist propaganda the second focused on why fascism opposes liberalism, and probably the most relevant to the world today was the third lecture where he detailed the tactics of fascist regimes. Trump into office, all the months leading up to it, and the subsequent time afterwards has brought a much-needed awareness to the topics of censorship, freedom of speech and expression, the role of the media, propaganda, and an even larger picture: fascism. (and by extension, the world as a whole), is knee-deep in odd and troubling times. His father was a sociology professor and Stanley himself is an expert in the philosophy language and epistemology, but what probably influenced his ideas and topics the most is where he lives. It seems a bit of a jump at first, to have a speaker set his sights on such a heavy and complicated topic as fascism, and some may even ask where the relevance lies. Each lecture opened with some snacks and drinks and a short intro of Stanley and his work given by a different Trent Philosophy professor each night, after which he immediately delved into the topic of fascism. Each had a healthy turn-out filling three quarters of the lecture hall. The lectures were a three-day long event divided into two-hour sessions on the 26th, 27th and 28th of September. The most effective collaborations of this kind occur when companies share a similar goal, such as increasing awareness of an issue or driving ticket sales for an event. Most often, the companies work together to create content that will be promoted to both of their audiences. Each company can contribute its creative strengths to develop an effective, engaging collaboration. Content Co-CreationĬontent is one of the most common co-marketing efforts. Done well, this type of collaboration can result in increased profit and exposure for both companies as well as lower prices for the consumer. It's important that all marketing efforts contain the logos of both brands so the initiative's joint nature is clearly conveyed. Sometimes each of these elements will be shared equally while other times one company will do all the marketing and the other will pay for it. This document should indicate how much financial investment each party is making and how much work each will put in. They focus on each party's expectations and intents. While not as specific as comprehensive marketing plans, joint marketing agreements summarize the project's strategy, end goal, deliverables, and funding sources. For example, it would indicate how brand names and logos should appear in marketing materials. The joint marketing agreement is legally binding and states the benefits received and responsibilities required of each business. Small business owners can often leverage their limited resources and expand their visibility by partnering with a larger company. Sharing the costs of advertising allows both businesses to benefit. The contract details how the businesses in question will share tools, materials, training, and other resources required for the joint marketing effort. You want to run a joint sale or marketing campaign with another business. You want to make your products available for sale at the online or brick and mortar store of another business.A co-marketing agreement is appropriate when: This type of collaboration is most common among businesses that share an audience. When entering into a joint marketing agreement with other businesses, an agreement can help prevent misunderstandings and protect your interests by detailing specific terms and conditions. Joint marketing agreements are often used to promote a product, event, or specific content. This allows them to get a larger return on their investment of time and money. A joint marketing agreement is a legal contract used to govern instances where two or more companies collaborate on marketing and promotional efforts. If the prompt asks for an obstacle that you’ve overcome, talk about a specific obstacle. It’s a personal essay, so make it personal. The college-specific prompts often have different word counts from the Common App essays, so double-check those word counts as well. One of the simplest things you can do to ensure your application stays at the top of the proverbial pile is to double-check your word count. 1Ĭommon App essays have a minimum word count of 250 and a maximum word count of 650. No matter which prompt you choose, here are some helpful tips to consider. They might state the college’s values or history and ask you to think about how you would contribute to that culture. It also relieves some pressure from trying to fit everything into the Common App essay.Ĭollege-specific prompts tend to ask about the ways you align with the college itself. While it may seem like extra work, consider this another opportunity to let the admissions officer get to know you. Keep in mind that many colleges and universities on Common App require a college-specific writing prompt in addition to the Common App essay. Your enthusiasm for a subject may make the writing process more fun and less challenging. Pick whichever one feels most compelling to write about. It’s up to you to choose which essay prompt to respond to. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. Joplin was also inspired by legendary blues vocalists Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Odetta, an early leading figure in the folk music movement. Musically, Janis Joplin and her friends gravitated toward blues and jazz, admiring such artists as Lead Belly. Joplin eventually developed a group of guy friends who shared her interest in music and the Beat Generation, which rejected the standard norms and emphasized creative expression (Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg were two of the Beat movement's leading figures). She was called a "pig" by some, while others said that she was sexually promiscuous. Joplin, who liked to stand out from the crowd, became the target of some teasing as well as a popular subject in the school's rumor mill. She eschewed the popular girls' fashions of the late 1950s, often choosing to wear men's shirts and tights, or short skirts. She got acne and gained some weight.Īt Thomas Jefferson High School, Joplin began to rebel. Joplin was a good student and fairly popular until around the age of 14 when some side effects of puberty started to kick in. Four years later, her brother, Michael, arrived. She was an only child until the age of six, when her sister, Laura, was born. For years, Joplin struggled to escape from this confining community, and spent even longer to trying to overcome her memories of her difficult years there.ĭeveloping a love for music at an early age, Joplin sang in her church choir as a child and showed some promise as a performer. She grew up in a small Texas town known for its connections to the oil industry with a skyline dotted with oil tanks and refineries. Breaking new ground for women in rock music, Joplin rose to fame in the late 1960s and became known for her powerful, blues-inspired vocals. Joplin was born on January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas. The singer died of an accidental overdose on October 4, 1970, at age 27. The album received mixed reviews, but her second project, Pearl (1971), released after Joplin's death, was a huge success. Known for her powerful, blues-inspired vocals, Joplin released her first solo effort, I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, in 1969. However, friction between Joplin and the band prompted her to part ways with Big Brother soon after. Their 1968 album, Cheap Thrills, was a huge hit. Janis Joplin developed a love of music at an early age, but her career didn't take off until she joined the band Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966. Firm ground įirm Ground cleats are defined as cleats that are made typically for use on natural surfaces such as dirt and grass. Today, different types of cleats exist for different surfaces: replaceable aluminum cleats which are worn in wet dirt, firm plastic cleats which are for regular surfaces, and short, plastic or rubber cleats for very hard surfaces. Later, in the 1990s, Adidas introduced another innovation in the form of rubber blades instead of studs, which faced different directions and allowed for better grip. They were lighter, had a non-leather sole, an upper portion made from kangaroo leather, and included replaceable rubber or plastic studs, which could be screwed in at different lengths. In 1954, the first modern football boots were made by Adidas. Innovations in cleat technology continued to take place throughout the mid to late 20th century. By the 1970s, players were wearing footwear with short, rubber cleats for use on artificial turf. As the game continued to grow, cleats had to adapt to technological advances in playing surfaces, most notably artificial turf. In the 1920s, detachable cleats were first introduced. The original football shoes were actually baseball shoes, but innovations quickly emerged. The use of cleats gained further notoriety in the United States with the birth of American football in the early 20th century. A baseball shoe, as defined by the Dickson Baseball Dictionary (3rd Ed), is "a special type of shoe designed and worn by baseball players that features cleats for traction and a full set of laces for support." The first official baseball shoe was invented and produced by Waldo M. Ĭleats began to be used in the United States in the 1860s when metal spikes were first used on baseball shoes. In the 1890s, a British Company (now known as Reebok), developed the earliest known spiked leather running shoes. The concept of spiked and studded shoes for other sports began to emerge as well in the late 19th century. Technology continued to improve in the coming decades, and by the 1890s studs are first used to make football cleats. Vulcanized rubber is used in the production of all types of shoes, but is especially beneficial in the production of cleats, in that one of the primary purposes of football cleats is to protect the player's feet. In the 1840s, a method of hardening rubber and stopping it from decaying, called vulcanization, was developed in both England and the United States. More importantly, technological innovations during this time period played a key role in new methods and materials used for production of cleats. With this, the sport took off in popularity, and understandably a demand for equipment began to emerge to ensure player safety and comfort. The shoes cost four shillings (about $200 today) and were probably made of especially strong leather.įootball remained a popular sport in England throughout the ensuing centuries, but it wasn't until the emergence of The Football Association in 1863 that the sport of football emerged as an actual organized game in England. According to researchers, the English monarch ordered the royal cordwainer (shoemaker), Isaac Ali, to make him a pair of hand-stitched boots "to play football". Although there are no images or surviving examples of cleats from that time period, the first written documentation of cleats comes from 1526, when "football boots" were listed in King Henry VIII's Great Wardrobe. The caligae (as they were called) were heavy-soled hobnailed military sandal- boots known for being issued to legionary soldiers and auxiliaries throughout the Roman Republic and Empire.Īthletes have worn cleats since at least the 1500s. It is thought that during the Roman Empire, Roman legionaries wore studded sandals that resembled cleats. and Green, M.: 1991, Dynamic motion control of an articulated figure using quaternion curves, in: Proc. of the Communicating with VirtualWorlds, Lausanne, Switzerland, pp. and Nam, K.W.: 1993, Interpolating solid orientations with circular blending quaternion curves, in: Proc.
